Complete Process of Refinishing Plywood Cabinets
- Use a 100-grit sanding sponge to sand the cabinet surface to remove existing stains and prepare the wood for staining. During this process, correct the surface defects and dirt on the plywood.
- Dust the countertop with a duster to remove any remaining sawdust after sanding. Then, use a rough cloth to absorb the residue and keep the base clean.
- Shake a can of wood stain with a stirring stick. Use a natural brush to apply this finish to the plywood in the direction of the grain to restore its color. Quickly wipe off excess with a cloth.
- After the stain has dried for the time specified on the label, and the adhesive into the surface. Again, use a natural brush and brush along the grain of the wood. Allow the sealer to dry to the touch, then sand the countertops with a 280-grit sanding sponge to create a smooth surface. Apply polyurethane varnish using a paintbrush or foam brush to properly seal and protect the wood. After curing overnight, sand the countertops with a 280-grit sponge.
- Repeat with at least one or two coats of varnish. Multiple layers ensure that the wood retains the necessary moisture to prevent it from drying out and cracking. Do not sand the topcoat.
