Painting your home can completely transform the look and feel of your living space. It does not matter if you are a seasoned painter or just starting out, following these step-by-step guidelines will help you achieve a professional-looking finish.
8 Steps To Paint Your Home
Painting is a decision that shouldn’t be taken lightly. Below are the steps that will help you paint the desired area of your home.
Step #1: Choose Your Color
Looking at color swatches is fun, but choosing the right color that will suit your home might take you a while. To determine the best color, you should paint a little area on your wall or walls and note what it looks like during the day vs. at night.
Step #2: Clean The Surface
- Remove cobwebs and dust from the corners of the area that you want to paint.
- Use a vacuum to clean baseboards and window sills. Next, run a wet cloth over these areas.
- Use a large fiber sponge and a mixture of water and dishwashing liquid to clean the area that you want to paint.
- Wipe the area down with a damp cloth to remove soap residue.
Step #3: Tape The Trim
Use blue painter’s tape to protect areas you don’t want your paint to get on. Run long strips of tape just inside the outer edges of these areas. (The tapes outside borders should line up exactly with the wall’s trim to protect any areas that your paintbrush or roller might accidentally strike while painting.)
Step #4: Pour Primer In A Tray
- If you’re using large sheets of waterproof material for the floor, you should set them out as soon as you start the work.
- Line the paint tray with a plastic liner or tin foil to make cleanup easier later.
- Pour in enough paint so that it almost fills the well toward the bottom of the tray.
Step #5: Brush The Corners
When you start painting, remember to brush the corners first. Apply paint with the brush in the corners of the walls. Spread out two to three inches away from moldings, doors, and windows.
Step #6: Roll The Primer
- Dip your roller into the primer paint, rolling it back and forth across the tray’s ridges. Make sure the roller gets evenly coated.
- Run the roller up and down a wall section. Apply primer until the section is fully covered. Continue until your wall is fully covered, reapplying primer to the roller as needed.
- Follow the manufacturer’s drying instructions on the can to ensure the primer is completely dry before applying paint.
Step #7: Remove The Painter’s Tape
You should then remove the tape while the paint is still wet (ideally about an hour after you’ve finished painting). This will allow you to avoid removing any dried paint along with it.
Step #8: Know When Your Paint Is Dry
Different kinds of paint dry at different speeds. Latex-based paint will feel dry to the touch in about an hour and be ready for a second coat in four hours. Oil-based paint takes six hours to feel dry, and you should wait a day to apply a second coat.
